The right wireless technology for your IoT project

Saving energy, avoiding production downtimes, automate processes: The functioning data transfer of connected machines and devices via mobile wireless technology (M2M communication) to the cloud is a neuralgic point. The right choice of wireless or rather data transmission technology for the respective IoT project is crucial here. Thomas explains what matters: “Security requirements, transmission speeds, and transmission frequency: these are the important parameters to which we orient ourselves.”

From our point of view, for many IoT solutions, the NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT) standard is the ideal choice for efficiently networking as many machines, devices and objects as possible. To explain: while the normal mobile network enables high data transmission in a short time, the focus in the low-frequency range of NB-IoT is the other way around: it builds on existing mobile networks, but smaller amounts of data are sent at a lower frequency. This results in very good network coverage with low energy requirements. For example, data can be transmitted via NB-IoT without any problems even in areas that are difficult to access, such as basements. NB-IoT is based on Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) and is highly standardized by 3GPP.

In addition, the focus in IOT projects is not necessarily on speed, but on security: NB-IoT is extremely secure, standardized worldwide and uses the high LTE security mechanisms. Moreover, via IP-VPN (Virtual Private Network) you are not on the public provider network: An encrypted virtual network enables tamper-proof data exchange.

Security, speed, frequency – the most important parameters for best data transmission

Intelligent IoT solutions are increasingly providing optimized processes, product innovations and new business models in many industries. HK.SYSTEMS can call on the right specialists for every step when implementing an IoT project, including the important area of mobile data transmission and the wireless technology that matches the project in question.

Our specialist for this complex of topics is Thomas Krekeler.

Here are the complete advantages of the NB-IoT standard based on mobile wireless technology:

  • Independence from customer-specific networks, hubs and gateways
  • Easy installation via Plug&Play – no ad
  • ministration effort
  • Accessibility everywhere
  • Extremely secure, reliable transmission of small data packets (at 200 kHerz)
  • Functionality even in shielded areas (deep building penetration, F90 doors, steel cabinets, etc.) – precisely what is not ensured with LTE
  • Cost-effective: low module, operating and service costs
  • Energy-efficient: low energy consumption, power-saving functions, runtimes of up to 5 years

Another transmission variant for IoT applications is the LTE-M (Long Term Evolution for Machines) or LTE-Cat-M1 standard, also known as Enhanced Machine-type Communications (eMTC). Developed at the initiative of the 3GPP cooperation, it is particularly suitable for mobile IoT applications such as smart city services, tracking, wearables or e-health solutions. Compared to NB-IoT, LTE-M offers higher data rates up to 1MBit/s and lower latency. HK.SYSTEMS uses this transmission standard in its mobile alerting system Pager.
